lineworks and their role... =/

Thu Feb 26, 2009, 8:28 AM
I've been wondering about this... mind if I ask you guys some questions?

do u draw a fine outline before doing CG?
lately, I'm just doing a rough, grade schooler doodling in the computer... then moves quickly to coloring/painting phase ^^; filling stuff here and there.
the reasons are to save time, and so that I don't have to edit a lot of stuff =]
but, recently I have problem with that... when u're doing coloring, it's pretty hard to fill the shapes correctly and sometimes I ends up making alot of mistakes :(
this makes me wonder if I should make a fine lineworks or not before doing CG <<

do u delete the outline after u've done doing CG?
most of the time, I deleted the outline after I've done coloring... if not, I just merged them with the painting layer...
yeah, this is another reason... like, why bother doing a fine lineworks if u're planning to delete them later -_-;
so, I'm always kind of lazy whenever it comes to doing lines... until recently when I did some works that requires a good lines and proper shape...

I wanna know your opinion... and perhaps some suggestion too, thx =]

kinda popular nowadays... so might as well do that too :)
here we goo~

SURVEY

1. [x] When you doodle, you say it's a simple drawing. (well, my works are kinda simplistic)
2. [x] Always provide excuses such as "Still in development" (is there such thing as 'finish'? ^^;)
3. [ ] Can only create an excuse of "I used a mouse, not a tablet" (raynkazuya did well with a mouse, so it's not an excuse)
4. [x] You only draw faces. (IRL-on sketchbook)
5. [x] You always draw faces at the same direction. (thankfully, there's 'flip' on PS)
6. [x] The proportion is awful.(@_@...)
7. [ ] Every character looks the same. (I still can't find my own style :()
8. [x] Uses different hairstyle to distinguish characters.
9. [ ] Cannot distinguish left and right direction.
10. [ ] "Sketch? Who cares about that?" (I do)
11. [x] You only draw sketches. (IRL-on sketchbook)
12. [ ] What's a LAYER??? ('merge' is my best friend)
13. [x] You always draw one character. (rarely more than that)
14. [x] You always draw characters in same angle. (never any good with 3D stuff)
15. [x] No matter how you draw, it's the same expression. (orz)
16. [x] You couldn't draw characters with movement. (definitely hard X_X)
17. [x] You barely draw feet. (waist, hips, feet... super-HARD!)
18. [x] You can't draw figures from high or low angles. (I hate 3D :D)
19. [ ] You don't even know the definition of high and low angle drawing.
20. [x] A shitty figure drawing in dynamic pose can be turned into a 4th Dimensional abstract. (definitely cant do it w/o ref)
21. [ ] Same character looks totally different when it is drawn in different angle or direction.
22. [x] You can't even draw anything other than characters or draw everything except characters. (definitely in need of variation)
23. [x] You can only draw cute characters. (yoda is hard to draw)
24. [x] You can only draw handsome characters. (uglies = monsters)
25. [x] Hands is your nightmare. (the horror...)
26. [ ] Your character's hands are always hidden behind.
27. [x] The idea sketch is professional but the actual quality is shitty. (lol, ancient-disease..)
28. [x] You try to cover up one of the eyes with hair so that you can draw only one eye. (just happen to like one-eyed char)
29. [x] Your works are always asymmetrical. (symmetrical = :iconqedjy:)
30. [x] Line art only = Finished piece. (IRL-on sketchbook or scrap gallery)
31. [x] Rough sketch only = Finished piece (IRL-on sketchbook... sometimes here)
32. [ ] You have no anatomical knowledge.
33. [x] You only draw eyes. (IRL - on sketchbook)
34. [ ] Character's hand and eyes are huge.
35. [x] You're poor in drawing the position of boobs. (boobies are hard to draw... need to grope them first :lol:)
36. [x] Your artworks are free from all logic. Awkward anatomy and proportion. (logical = photograph... illogical = artwork)
37. [x] You lose confidence when other people's works look great. (yeah, YOU!)
38. [x] You think they are genius when they come up with satisfied quality. (inferiority complex)
39. [x] You collect other people's works as practice references but you actually collect them as a collection. (lol, I collects picture for the sake of collecting :lol:)
40. [ ] While drawing, you easily lose patience and go do something else. (I can even skip bath, eat and sleep... :D)
41. [x] Tablet is your god item. (basically that's a cheating item)
42. [ ] You regain confidence when other people's works look crappier than yours.
43. [x] You are more than willing to draw but you lose the spirit so easily. (my mood kinda seasonal :D)
44. [x] You completely lose the confidence when you see the works of true genius. (kinda frustating to see people younger than me do better)
45. [x] You draw once a month or even once a year. (once every blue moon :lol:)
46. [x] You get mad when your favorite artists are being lazy. (c'monnn draw more!!! *needs some download content* :D)
47. [x] When you draw hentai art, you end up drawing grotesque horror pictures because their proportion is so fucking awful. (never any good in nudies)
48. [x] You don't even have faith in yourself. (...It's already hard just to keep-up with some-certain-member here)
49. [ ] You can't even draw since the beginning.
50. [x] You realized there are problems and know where to fix but you never do.(always looks forward!... no, basically just a lazy ass :lol:)

hahahahah... I'm pathetic
OTL

Experimenting is fun~ or so I thought ^^;

ever tried a 15 seconds drawing?
they said if u want to know whether u got talent or not, do that stuff above... :lol:
I failed miserably, only managed to draw some weird figure, plus it was really an awful drawing too :D
I never been good with speedy, but I never expected to have such an awful result in drawing ^^;
ugh, so embarassing! =P

----

lately, I've been switching around this two program...
have tried both and achieved different result, and I think there's a distinct characteristic on each program based on the result of my works

PS... well, this thing's really good in making photo-realism stuff (it's a photo-editing tools afterall), has a sophisticated and nifty layer feature, and there's a load of *magic* tools and tricks included to makes ur life easier and makes the images looks even more wonderful :D
what's more, there's so many methods in doing things that it's kinda fun to mess around with =P
but the downside, so sophisticated that it's rather HEAVY... real memory-comsuming kind, and whats more, it crashes often... esp. in the newer version (the reason I stick to PSCS1 nowadays =P)

Painter seems produces more vibrant (or saturated?) image, revolves purely on one drawing skills, has a good stroke result, and kinda jack-of-all-trade when it comes to *proper* art tools (although I don't get most of them) ^^;
uses properly, and u can make something *real* amazing (or maybe intimidating)...:lol:
although several failed attempt could result in artblock... :D
also, it's somewhat hard to make things realistic since it all comes down to your "ability", and so little feature for touch-ups makes life seems a bit harder ^^;

recently, I tried to use painter again... kinda hard since my drawing skills seems a bit rusty (or simply limited :D), but I'll persevere! I still have much to learn... yosh!

how to correct~

Sun Nov 30, 2008, 8:02 AM
recently, I have seen several cases when critics becomes a popular topics here (based on what I've read on others journal)...
they said critic helps us to know our places, to motivate us in becoming better, and stuff like that...
in reality, is it really helps :?
depend...

for example, saying things like "it sucks", "the **** looks weird", "learn more about drawing", or another kind of one-liner won't do at all... you're not helping. you've just created another problem, like confusion, annoyance, and provocation ^^;

from what I know, "compliment first, then point out the wrong part"...
like, say something about how you like about the picture, then suggest something that can make that picture even better.
explain things in detail, things that can be done and always says that this is 'your own opinion', not a fact (since you're not a god). :lol:

always places yourself in equal footing... never thinks yourself above the other, or else it'd sound like a "preaching". no one likes to be preached ^^;

and don't forget to analyzes... :)

some people are masochist, meaning they're looking for a beating.
while the others are 'diamond in the rough', meaning they got potential, but don't know how to polish themselves.
either way, mind your manners... no one respects people with no manners

hope it helps :lol:
and pardon me for mistakes on english
